Experience dental bone grafting at our full-service dental practice in Chicago, IL. Led by Dr. Daniel Strobel, Dr. Isabella Terrassa, and Dr. Scott Drucker, our dedicated team specializes in advanced dental procedures that enhance bone volume in preparation for dental implant restoration.
Dental bone grafting is a technique used to replace or augment bone in the jaw, typically to provide a stable foundation for dental implants or address bone loss caused by periodontal disease, trauma, or tooth extraction. The bone replacement then stimulates the body's natural bone-healing process, promoting the growth of new bone, and ensuring the stability and functionality needed for successful dental restorations.
Dental bone grafting is typically necessary when removing teeth for future implant placement, when there is insufficient bone in the jaw to support dental implants, or when we need to stabilize existing teeth. This procedure is frequently needed after tooth loss, periodontal disease, or trauma to restore the jawbone volume, maintain proper dental function and aesthetic quality.
The material used for a bone graft typically comes from a bone bank that processes donor tissue, animal bone tissue, or from synthetic sources that the body resorbs. Ultimately, the bone grafts act as a scaffold for your own bone, and your body eventually replaces all of the grafted tissue with your own native bone tissue.
An allograft bone graft involves the use of bone tissue from a human donor (cadaver bone) that is processed and sterilized for safety and compatibility, or synthetic bone materials that mimic natural bone properties. Allografts do not require a secondary surgical site for harvesting and come in various forms allowing for flexibility in grafting applications.
This option for bone grafting uses bone tissue derived from a different species, typically bovine (cow) or porcine (pig), which is treated thoroughly to ensure compatibility and safety for human use. Their availability and structural compatibility make them a practical choice for enhancing bone regeneration. This kind of bone is most commonly used around implants, and to increase the height of the upper jaw in a sinus lift procedure.
Dental concerns can be complex, and our goal is to address each specific concern while providing fully customized care. During your consultation, our doctors will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine your exact needs, which may include procedures such as bone grafting. We will then develop a personalized dental treatment plan and provide pre-operative guidelines to ensure the best possible outcome.
Cone Beam CT scan is used to assess the extent of bone loss, and determine the best approach and materials to effectively restore the affected area.
At our practice in Chicago bone grafting is a procedure that will be performed under local anesthesia, The surgeon will access the area to be treated, condition the tissues and then place the bone replacement graft. The graft will then be secured by a protective membrane and sutures. We will provide specific post-operative care instructions. To reduce the risk of infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics or an antiseptic mouthwash.
At your two to three week follow-up visit, we will remove any sutures and evaluate the initial healing of your tissue and bone.
Over the next several months, the graft material from the bone grafting procedure becomes the scaffold upon which your own bone builds the necessary foundation for future dental work. At this time we will take a final Cone Beam CT scan to assess the bone quality and together with digital impressions, plan your future implant position.

During recovery, you may experience some discomfort or soreness, but the bone grafting procedure itself takes place under local anesthesia and should be pain-free.
Initially, there may be swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding, all of which usually subside within the first week. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the bone grafting procedure but typically lasts from two to three weeks. It’s important to follow your care provider’s instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid infection. Instructions commonly involve a softer diet, taking a course of antibiotics, and modifying your oral hygiene for a couple weeks.
Bone grafting typically needs 3-4 months to mature for implant placement, and in some specific procedures may take closer to 9 months. Your care provider will give you exact guidance during your consultation.
Our fee varies depending on the type and extent of the bone replacement, which will be specific to each patient.
While we find most dental insurances cover the bone grafting procedure, we always recommend you check with your carrier, as there are sometimes very specific conditions that need to be satisfied in order to obtain coverage.
