Downtown Chicago
oral cancer screening

with OralID®

A quick, comfortable addition to your dental exam

OralID® adds an extra layer to your routine oral cancer screening using fluorescence technology to help your dentist spot areas that may need a closer look. It is quick, comfortable, and requires no needles, radiation, or separate appointment.

Why we use OralID® during oral cancer screenings

A traditional oral cancer exam includes a careful visual and tactile evaluation of your mouth, tongue, and surrounding tissues. OralID does not replace that exam. Instead, it uses fluorescence technology to help your dentist visualize oral tissue in a different way.

At Strobel Dentistry, we use this technology as part of our comprehensive approach to preventive dental care in Downtown Chicago.

Who should talk to their dentist about oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer screening can be an important part of routine dental care, especially if you have known risk factors.

Common oral cancer risk factors

These can include:

Tobacco use

Heavy or frequent alcohol use

Certain types of HPV infection

A personal history of head and neck cancer

Tobacco, alcohol, and certain HPV infections are established risk factors for oral and oropharyngeal cancers.

You do not need to have a known risk factor to talk with your dentist about oral cancer screening.

Part of comprehensive preventive care

At Strobel Dentistry, oral health means looking beyond cavities and teeth. Screening the soft tissues of your mouth is another part of helping you stay informed about your overall oral health.

What to expect during an OralID® screening

The screening is simple and happens during your dental visit.

Step 1
We examine your mouth

Your dentist or hygienist begins with a conventional visual examination of your mouth and oral tissues.

Step 2
We use the OralID® light

The handheld OralID device uses blue fluorescence light to provide an additional view of the tissues inside your mouth.

Step 3
We explain what we see

If an area needs a closer look, your dentist will explain what they noticed and whether monitoring, further evaluation, or a referral is appropriate.

OralID is a screening aid. It does not diagnose oral cancer, and suspicious findings may require additional evaluation or biopsy.

Frequently asked questions about oral cancer screening in Downtown Chicago

Does an OralID® screening hurt?

No. OralID uses a handheld light to examine oral tissue, so there are no needles, radiation, or recovery time.

What is OralID®?

OralID is an adjunctive screening device that uses fluorescence technology to help dentists visualize abnormalities in oral tissue. It is used alongside a conventional visual and tactile exam.

Is OralID® the same as an oral cancer diagnosis?

No. OralID helps your dentist identify areas that may warrant a closer look, but it cannot diagnose cancer. A suspicious area may require monitoring, referral, or biopsy for a definitive diagnosis.

What are common oral cancer risk factors?

Established risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol use, and certain HPV infections. A previous head or neck cancer can also increase risk.

What happens if my dentist notices something unusual?

Your dentist will explain what they see and recommend the appropriate next step. Depending on the finding, that may include monitoring the area, further evaluation, or referral to a specialist.

Do I need a separate appointment for OralID® screening?

No. At Strobel Dentistry, the screening can be incorporated into a routine dental exam, so you do not need to schedule a separate visit.

Is oral cancer screening covered by dental insurance?

Coverage depends on your specific dental plan. Strobel Dentistry is a fee-for-service practice and can submit claims to PPO insurance plans for available out-of-network benefits. Our team can help you understand expected costs before treatment.
