An onlay is a pre-molded part outside the tooth that fits over the cusps and is bonded to the tooth with dental cement. Light curing hardens the onlay quickly.
The onlay is placed on the tooth by a technician in a dental lab. The onlay covers the chewing surface of a back tooth, but extends onto the chewing surface to replace a cusp. In the past, onlays were made only of gold, but like inlays, patients are increasingly asking for tooth-colored onlays. It is possible to bond the restoration to the tooth by making the onlay of ceramic/porcelain. By bonding, the onlay will strengthen the tooth and help seal it to it more effectively.
